Talos: Neutralizing Vulnerabilities with Security Workarounds for Rapid Response

Considerable delays often exist between the discovery of a vulnerability and the issue of a patch. One way to mitigate this window of vulnerability is to use a configuration workaround, which prevents the vulnerable code from being executed at the cost of some lost functionality -- but only if one is available. Since program configurations are not specifically designed to mitigate software vulnerabilities, we find that they only cover 25.2% of vulnerabilities. To minimize patch delay vulnerabilities and address the limitations of configuration workarounds, we propose Security Workarounds for Rapid Response (SWRRs), which are designed to neutralize security vulnerabilities in a timely, secure, and unobtrusive manner. Similar to configuration workarounds, SWRRs neutralize vulnerabilities by preventing vulnerable code from being executed at the cost of some lost functionality. However, the key difference is that SWRRs use existing error-handling code within programs, which enables them to be mechanically inserted with minimal knowledge of the program and minimal developer effort. This allows SWRRs to achieve high coverage while still being fast and easy to deploy. We have designed and implemented Talos, a system that mechanically instruments SWRRs into a given program, and evaluate it on five popular Linux server programs. We run exploits against 11 real-world software vulnerabilities and show that SWRRs neutralize the vulnerabilities in all cases. Quantitative measurements on 320 SWRRs indicate that SWRRs instrumented by Talos can neutralize 75.1% of all potential vulnerabilities and incur a loss of functionality similar to configuration workarounds in 71.3% of those cases. Our overall conclusion is that automatically generated SWRRs can safely mitigate 2.1x more vulnerabilities, while only incurring a loss of functionality comparable to that of traditional configuration workarounds.Comment: Published in Proceedings of the 37th IEEE Symposium on Security and Privacy (Oakland 2016

Transport of non tracer particles in simple flows

An experimental study on the behaviour of transported particles in a flow of simple geometry has been developed. A pair of millimetric channels that cross at 0°, with a shunt between them where two miscible fluids are inyected at constant flow rate. One of the fluids is a solution of dye (passive tracer) as well as microbeads (non passive tracer) of neutral buoyancy. The other fluid is made of the same solution but without any tracer. For the systematic study of the particle trajectories an experimental tracking method has been set up. The experiments have been recorded with a high spatial and temporal resolution camera coupled to a low power microscope. The images have been analysed with a coded processing program developed in our laboratory. The trajectories of the particles, with different Reynolds number, have been analysed, in order to obtain the distribution, speed and bead concentration at each outlet as a function of the used parameters and have been compared with previous results on similar geometries and miscible fluids.Fil: Brabat, M.. This article presents the results of a territorial research whose empirical purpose is those areas of the Buenos Aires Conurbano (outer Buenos Aires) where people has been developing land and housing access strategies outside the formal real estate market: villas, settlements and neighborhoods of the state housing and urbanization policy. It began in 2011 and provides weighted primary statistical information on more than 15,000 homes and households and 65,000 people in 14 neighborhoods. This research work is concerned with the study of social reproduction strategies of households in the popular economy, which has required the construction of conceptual categories that enable the dialogue between theory and empire. These categories are sketches or questions in some cases and in others they have already reached a certain degree of maturity, and are the product of the articulation of the individual research lines of the team members, while others are the basis for collective research.Fil: Vio, Marcela. Curcumin encapsulation in nanostructures for cancer therapy: a 10-year overview

    Get PDF
Journal pre-proofsCurcumin (CUR) is a phenolic compound present in some herbs, including Curcuma longa Linn. (turmeric rhizome), with a high bioactive capacity and characteristic yellow color. It is mainly used as a spice, although it has been found that CUR has interesting pharmaceutical properties, acting as a natural antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and antitumoral agent. Nonetheless, CUR is a hydrophobic compound with low water solubility, poor chemical stability, and fast metabolism, limiting its use as a pharmacological compound. Smart drug delivery systems (DDS) have been used to overcome its low bioavailability and improve its stability. The current work overviews the literature from the past 10 years on the encapsulation of CUR in nanostructured systems, such as micelles, liposomes, niosomes, nanoemulsions, hydrogels, and nanocomplexes, emphasizing its use and ability in cancer therapy. The studies highlighted in this review have shown that these nanoformulations achieved higher solubility, improved tumor cytotoxicity, prolonged CUR release, and reduced side effects, among other interesting advantages. This study was funded by the Coordination for Higher Level Graduate Improvements (CAPES/Brazil, finance code 001), National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq/Brazil, PIBIC process #123483/2020-4), State of São Paulo Research Foundation (FAPESP/Brazil, processes #2017/10789-1, #2018/10799-0, #2018/06475-4, #2018/07707-6, #2019/08549-8, and #2020/03727-2). ESHRE guideline: female fertility preservation.

    Get PDF
Study questionWhat is the recommended management for women and transgender men with regards to fertility preservation (FP), based on the best available evidence in the literature?Summary answerThe ESHRE Guideline on Female Fertility Preservation makes 78 recommendations on organization of care, information provision and support, pre-FP assessment, FP interventions and after treatment care. Ongoing developments in FP are also discussed. What is known alreadyThe field of FP has grown hugely in the last two decades, driven by the increasing recognition of the importance of potential loss of fertility as a significant effect of the treatment of cancer and other serious diseases, and the development of the enabling technologies of oocyte vitrification and ovarian tissue cryopreservation (OTC) for subsequent autografting. This has led to the widespread, though uneven, provision of FP for young women.Study design size durationThe guideline was developed according to the structured methodology for development of ESHRE guidelines. After formulation of key questions by a group of experts, literature searches and assessments were performed. Papers published up to 1 November 2019 and written in English were included in the review.Participants/materials setting methodsBased on the collected evidence, recommendations were formulated and discussed until consensus was reached within the guideline group. A stakeholder review was organized after finalization of the draft. The final version was approved by the guideline group and the ESHRE Executive Committee.Main results and the role of chanceThis guideline aims to help providers meet a growing demand for FP options by diverse groups of patients, including those diagnosed with cancer undergoing gonadotoxic treatments, with benign diseases undergoing gonadotoxic treatments or those with a genetic condition predisposing to premature ovarian insufficiency, transgender men (assigned female at birth), and women requesting oocyte cryopreservation for age-related fertility loss. The guideline makes 78 recommendations on information provision and support, pre-FP assessment, FP interventions and after treatment care, including 50 evidence-based recommendations-of which 31 were formulated as strong recommendations and 19 as weak-25 good practice points and 3 research only recommendations. Of the evidence-based recommendations, 1 was supported by high-quality evidence, 3 by moderate-quality evidence, 17 by low-quality evidence and 29 by very low-quality evidence. To support future research in the field of female FP, a list of research recommendations is provided.Limitations reasons for cautionMost interventions included are not well studied in FP patients. As some interventions, e.g. oocyte and embryo cryopreservation, are well established for treatment of infertility, technical aspects, feasibility and outcomes can be extrapolated. For other interventions, such as OTC and IVM, more evidence is required, specifically pregnancy outcomes after applying these techniques for FP patients. Such future studies may require the current recommendations to be revised.Wider implications of the findingsThe guideline provides clinicians with clear advice on best practice in female FP, based on the best evidence currently available. In addition, a list of research recommendations is provided to stimulate further studies in FP.Study funding/competing interestsThe guideline was developed and funded by ESHRE, covering expenses associated with the guideline meetings, with the literature searches and with the dissemination of the guideline. The guideline group members did not receive payment. Correlating Sensitive Behaviours with User Interaction on Android

    No full text
In recent years, ransomware and private information leakage have become more prevalent on mobile devices. Distinguishing such applications from benign ones that make use of similar functionality is challenging because they make use of the exact same APIs. In order to disambiguate these uses, a security analyst may wish to consider whether the user was aware of and consented to the sensitive behaviour. This thesis seeks to aid an analyst making this determination by correlating sensitive behaviours with user interaction. In order to assess user awareness, an analyst should consider all paths to a sensitive behaviour. A path to a sensitive behaviour should be preceded by some UI interaction or a read from persistent storage written to as a consequence of UI interaction. A technique capable of correlating sensitive behaviours with preceding UI interaction has been implemented and evaluated on a suite of synthetic applications.M.A.S

Study of wettability and characterization of the pdms - glass system in microfluidic devices

Fil: Luengo, Josefina.
